GOLF IN TENERIFEThere are nine courses on the island, two are nine hole tasters for the big championship courses, but even they are blessed with a full range of training facilities, restaurants and unique views. Real Club Golf Tenerifeeal Club de Golf Tenerife· With respect to age and tradition, let’s start at the REAL CLUB DE GOLF TENERIFE in Tacaronte near the north airport of Los Rodeos. Built in 1932, it is the second oldest course in Spain but it can still teach the young upstarts a thing or two about style. Gently sloping over 5,694 meters and 600 meters above the sea, the long drives will give you time to appreciate the lush green surroundings of the north. From the large free car park to the snack bar and restaurant it oozes class It has so many members that open sessions are only on weekdays between 8am and 12.30, but well worth the wait. Golf La Roselada· While in the north, let’s pop in to the first of the 9 hole courses. GOLF LA ROSALEDA is near to Puerto de la Cruz and in wine growing country. This course might not have the vintage but it has the body, with great training facilities including a bi-lingual school. Bunkers, chipping and driving greens and putting on real or artificial grass will set you up nicely and you can always double up if you want to play 18 holes. Golf Del Sur· There are two modern golf courses within ten minutes of the Reina Sofia airport in the South of the island. The first of them, . GOLF DEL SUR has wide fairways and testing water hazards, just don’t get distracted by the cliff top views of the Atlantic. Amarilla Golf· Next door is another purpose built resort AMARILLA GOLF where designer Donald Steel let nature take centre stage and you will find yourself facing an impressive mountain range at some holes and hugging the coast path at others. At the 5th hole you even have to chip over the incoming sea. Golf Los Palos· GOLF LOS PALOS is the other 9 hole course and is a little further west towards Los Cristianos. The shop, restaurant and kids playground will look after your needs and it’s a great way for beginners to start. Campo de Golf Las AmericasHere’s a real surprise, one of the most attractive and restful courses is CAMPO DE GOLD LAS AMERICAS sandwiched between the bar and club capital of the south and the motorway but an oasis of calm in its natural amphitheatre setting. The 3 floor clubhouse, gentle slopes, streams and waterfalls all helped to make this a big favorite for the players at the Spanish Ladies Open a few years ago. Golf Costa Adeje· GOLF COSTA ADEJE went one better, staging the 2003 Men’s Spanish Open, and how could they not have been impressed by the 27 holes from mountains down to the sea. Built on old banana plantations it has kept the terraces and low stone walls, and it’s large colonial clubhouse is only upstaged by a 45,000 square meter driving range on three levels, complete with a lift for the buggies. Now that is classy! Abama Golf· If dropping names of celebrity golfers like Bill Clinton and Zinedine Zidane doesn’t impress you, the sheer scale and luxury of ABAMA GOLF on the west coast, certainly will. Take a 5 star hotel with award winning restaurants, tennis and spa facilities add 25,000 trees, 22 lakes and waterfalls and 6,232 meters of playing surface and you are starting to get the picture. You want more? Ok then how about its own beach, views of La Gomera and a challenging course for players of all levels. Buenavista Club de Golf· And we still have one more gem for you BUENAVISTA CLUB DE GOLF in the north west is one of Sevriano Ballesteros’s best designs, building on nature’s groundwork of the Teno mountain range and a rugged landscape that asks the golfer lots of tough questions. Winner of the 2006 Madera Verde environmental business award, there’s plenty of natural distractions but keep focused on your game and reward yourself at the restaurant perched on a cliff top overlooking the Atlantic. |
